What To Put In Your MP3 Downloads

You’re probably aware by now that a good number of musicians use free MP3 downloads to help themselves reach a wider audience. And while there are no ‘right’ rules that govern the practice, there are certain guidelines that you’d do well to follow. What should you put into each file to achieve the maximum possible effect?

1. A Classic Song

This can be interpreted two ways. First, you could choose to record a classic or popular song in your genre and then put your twist to it. People will most definitely be searching for free MP3 music downloads of popular or classic tracks, and your own music will be shown right along with the rest of the results. Many artists like David Cook and Boyce Avenue started out on this track.

Another option is to use some of your original stuff. It’s riskier because nobody will be looking for an MP3 download of your track explicitly, but it does more to establish a name for yourself in the music world because it’s entirely novel. Just be sure to use the best and catchiest track in your repertoire.

2. A Resource

Suppose that a listener liked your songs and wanted to know more about you. Each MP3 file you release on the Internet should point to a site, place or event where people could go to know more about you. This is the precursor to building a fan base, and should not be omitted if you intend to pursue music seriously.

Plug your site URL or the details of your next gig at the start or end of the track. Make sure you say it clearly so that listeners will be able to follow. Alternatively, you could use the comments section in the song tags to carry your site URL. Listeners will then see what you wrote when they play your song on their media players.

3. A Description

Music – even the relatively limited world of totally free MP3 downloads – is a wide field. That’s why the industry uses genres and all sorts of keywords to help narrow things down. You should do the same, if you want to start building the fan base that will buy your albums and queue up for your concert tickets.

A specific genre is a good label to use in the file name of the MP3 file you upload, simply because you call out directly to a particular crowd. If you feel that you don’t exactly fit into any particular genre, though, you may want to use adjectives and ’sounds like’ descriptions in the file name. Say that one track is perfect for ‘just chilling out,’ or say that it sounds like a ‘techno 90’s-era Mariah Carey’.

Remember that this whole exercise of offering free MP3 downloads has three goals. First is to attract new listeners; your tracks have to be easy to find. Second, you want to create a fan base; each track has to show listeners how to connect with you. Lastly, they’ll make a name for you in the business; make sure that each track is uniquely you.
