Music Therapy And Its Benefits
Music perhaps is the best relaxing and soothing medium in any mental or intellectual impairment. People usually find refuge in the lap of music where they get a divine feeling and all their worries and tensions disappear. Music has emerged as one of the most popular methods of treatments and relaxation modes.
First of all, it refreshes the mood of the listener. If he is tired or feeling irritated, he will get back to his normal being after listening soft and soothing music for some time. It happens because music contains such notes and vibrations which relax the brain muscles and tissues. This increases the flow of blood in the brain and ultimately to the entire body and so the person feels light hearted and relieved of the day’s hard work. It is such a wonderful therapy that some people are addicted to this. They cannot sleep without listening music and some are even more addicted that they cannot even think or write without music playing by their side. In countries like India, music is considered as the gift of God and a medium to get in touch with Him. It affects the emotional, mental, social and spiritual well being of a person and helps a lot in improving his cognitive thinking and mental abilities.
In other therapies like aerobics and warm up exercises, music is played side by side so that the movements are cordial and move with the beats of the music. Music therapy finds greater applications in curing behavioral and emotional disorders where the person is stressed all the time and does not want to spend time in isolation. Music gives him a chance to think alone and about his own self.

‘Round the Table Again $17.98 Performances by Doc Watson with Frosty Morn have become a high point at Merlefest, the annual gathering launched in memory of Doc’s son and collaborator, Merle Watson. The band, formed by Merle shortly before his death in 1985, plays impeccably on this Merlefest recording, but Doc opens alone with two traditional performances, playing banjo behind his own vocals on “Lynchburg Town” and singing a cappella on the haunting ballad “Coo Coo Bird.” Gradually, the rest of Frosty Morn takes the stage, one song at a time; as each member comes out, Watson steps back a little further until he is integrated fully into the group. Understandably though, he holds the spotlight more than anyone else, telling a few folksy preacher jokes, urging his colleagues to “play it, son,” even yodeling in classic fashion on “Jimmie’s Mean Mamma Blues.” The younger guys on the gig seem eager too, but to a fault; they whoop and yelp a little excessively after “On a Monday” and turn “Show Bizness” into a somewhat silly exercise. Watson, in contrast, tempers his enthusiasm with an almost anachronistic dignity. He does overreach at times, most awkwardly on an uncomfortable rendition of the R&B chestnut “Sincerely.” Though his voice has worn a bit, it still animates more congenial material with his combination of warmth and stoic detachment. This is evident especially in his reading of “Nights in White Satin,” which raises spirits that would doubtless have startled the Moody Blues. In the end, all of these tracks only echo the introduction that opens the disc: “A national treasure…Doc Watson.” ~ Robert L. Doerschuk, Rovi |

24 Karat Heartache $12.99 On his second album in 1997 and his first for the American Harvest Recording Society after leaving Columbia, Vern Gosdin enlisted Ron Oates as co-producer. This is the most melancholy and dark record he’s ever issued. It’s also the most beautiful and tender. In fact, given how many albums he’s issued, this is one of the true classics in his catalog. Having written everything here, Gosdin claims they were written for one woman who left him; he also says quite honestly that when she left these songs became hard to sing, and he did the best he could. Damn! Gosdin’s protagonists take full responsibility for their folly in losing the women they love. This is plain on “The Number,” where two men meet in a bar — one claims to know the best lover in town and the protagonist gets his number from the boaster, only to find it’s his own and blame himself for her going bad. And this is just the beginning. The title cut, in classic Gosdin ballad style, is about a woman whose wedding ring becomes a “24 Karat Heartache” 24 hours a day. “Three or Four Times a Day” is the silky Gosdin honky tonk trademark. Without the slickness of his Columbia productions, the true depth of Gosdin’s voice comes bursting forth from the mix in pure country-soul grandeur. “All the Way Through” is a midtempo love song with a dynamite chorus, accented rhythm section, and backing vocal by Dennis Wilson. The hard-driving “Wettest Dry County” is badass outlaw country with kicking guitars and pedal steel. “What I Threw Away” is the most devastating, self-incriminating confession Gosdin’s ever written. On the last two tracks, “I’m Where a Memory (Can Die for a Night)” and “Where Do We Take It from Here,” Gosdin shows listeners both sides of the coin of escapism and the wish to transcend the present state of separation and resolve it all one way or another. But in the grain of Gosdin’s voice, it feels like this is a futile exercise, whispered by a ghost. There are few records as consistently… |

30 $4.73 With the simultaneous release of 30 and Songs I Heard, Harry Connick Jr. has again found new ways to express himself artistically while demonstrating the craftsmanship and work ethic of a virtuoso musician at the top of his game. 30 is the fourth in a succession of recordings that capture Connick’s music at its most personal and improvisatory, joining the albums 11, 20 and 25, each named for his age at the time of recording. As Connick explains, There’s a conceptual theme that runs through these recordings. It captures a moment in time, it’s like a snapshot of where I’m coming from musically. Beginning with the carefree jump blues of Walkin’, the stripped down recording is an exercise in dynamics, as Connick shows off expert piano and vocal skills with subtle flair. Connick is joined by the late gospel singer Rev. James Moore on There’s Always One More Time, and trumpet master Wynton Marsalis on I’ll Only Miss Her (When I Think of Her). From New Orleans to the narrative and playful Don’t Fence Me In, each of the fourteen tracks is a window into Connick’s artistry. |

A Funny Little Cross to Bear $10.98 Brief and powerful, Funny Little Cross to Bear collects five songs and one mesmerizing story, all of which were culled from a vault of live performances in record stores, on radio programs, and in clubs and concert halls around the world. Jim White leads off with “Stranger Candy,” a casualty left off of 2007’s wonderful Transnormal Skiperoo that explores (in typical Southern Gothic fashion) the lure of chemically altered consciousness. This track, as well as “Jailbird,” “Plywood Superman,” and “Jim 3:16″ feature harmonies from bass player Fiona McBain and weepy guitar from Patrick Hargon, while “Alabama Chrome” and “Counting Numbers in the Air” rely solely on White’s easy voice, electric guitar, and programmed drumbeats. For many, a live mini-EP would serve only in bridging the gap between studio albums, but in White’s capable hands, he turns what could have been an exercise in spiritual bankruptcy into an instantly engaging, often funny, and ridiculously poignant electric mini-mass. ~ James Christopher Monger, Rovi |

Adieu False Heart $10.74 By the early 2000s Linda Ronstadt was galaxies away from the ’70s soft rock on which she made her name. On a journey that led her deeper and deeper into American roots music she began working with traditional Cajun artist Ann Savoy (of the Savoy-Doucet Cajun Band), and the results of the collaboration can be found on 2006’s graceful and beautifully measured Adieu, False Heart . The material is deep-roots folk with a strong Cajun flavor, and with top session players like mandolinist Sam Bush on board, the execution and playing is never less than flawless. Yet the arrangements and approach transcend any sort of genre exercise: Ronstadt and Savoy sing as though they are spirits resting between the past and the future, giving this mixture of originals, covers, and traditional songs a beautiful, timeless quality. |

After Bathing at Baxter’s $22.98 The Jefferson Airplane opened 1967 with Surrealistic Pillow and closed it with After Bathing at Baxter’s, and what a difference ten months made. Bookending the year that psychedelia emerged in full bloom as a freestanding musical form, After Bathing at Baxter’s was among the purest of rock’s psychedelic albums, offering few concessions to popular taste and none to the needs of AM radio, which made it nowhere remotely as successful as its predecessor, but it was also a lot more daring. The album also showed a band in a state of ferment, as singer/guitarist Marty Balin largely surrendered much of his creative input in the band he’d founded, and let Paul Kantner and Grace Slick dominate the songwriting and singing on all but one cut (“Young Girl Sunday Blues”). The group had found the preceding album a little too perfect, and not fully representative of the musicians or what they were about, and they were determined to do the music their way on Baxter’s; additionally, they’d begun to see how far they could take music (and music could take them) in concert, in terms of capturing variant states of consciousness. Essentially, After Bathing at Baxter’s was the group’s attempt to create music that captured what the psychedelic experience sounded and felt like to them from the inside; on a psychic level, it was an introverted exercise in music-making and a complete reversal of the extroverted experience in putting together Surrealistic Pillow. Toward that end, they were working “without a net,” for although Al Schmitt was the nominal producer, he gave the group the freedom to indulge in any experimentation they chose to attempt, effectively letting them produce themselves. They’d earned the privilege, after two huge hit singles and the Top Five success of the prior album, all of which had constituted RCA’s first serious new rock success (and the label’s first venture to the music’s cutting edge) since Elvis Presley left the Army. The resulting record was startlingly d… |

Alien $13.98 Never mind System of a Down’s irresistibly quirky Serj Tankian. If any heavy metal musician were picked to represent the musically adept but incurably goofy spirit of Frank Zappa, it would probably be gifted lunatic Devin Townsend, whose prolific and eclectic output — not to mention blackened sense of humor — over the course of a steadily lengthening career continues to amaze and confuse in equal quantities. Through those years, Strapping Young Lad, while ostensibly a “group,” has served as the most common laboratory for Townsend’s wacky solo experiments, but word is, studio album number four, 2005’s fittingly named Alien, is their first true band effort. This is somewhat rather hard to ascertain, but there’s no disputing the additional claim about the album constituting an exercise in catharsis, nor the fact that few bands choose song titles as descriptive of their contents as SYL. To wit, “Imperial” comprises Scandinavian-flavored black metal of earth-scorching intensity, the nearly unpronounceable “Skeksis” contains a suitably schizophrenic and disorienting art rock-metal cacophony, and “Shitstorm” offers, well, a sh*tstorm of unprecedented madness, rife with giggle-inducing lyrics and a children’s choir all crammed inside. Moving right along, lest we be overcome by the oncoming rush, “Love?” delivers intentionally dumb lyrics via chorused harmonies (think King’s X from hell), “Shine” channels Fear Factory’s nightmarish industrial metal (and explains bassist Byron Stroud’s parallel work with that group), the blazing hilarity of “We Ride” thrashes itself into an absolute froth, the riffs of “Possessions” groove like they were played by Dimebag Darrell, and the impossibly gentle “Two Weeks” finally forces the collapse of the entire record, which implodes into its own black hole, taking along with it the plaintive acoustic guitar and whispering sweetness. This is but a brief reprieve, however, as the obscurely named “Thalamus” racks up the v… |

All One $16.98 Countless fans have been introduced to Krishna Das through yoga classes, where his soothing rhythmic chants, preformed in a deep, rich timbre, complement instruction on the spiritual element of the exercise. Only those students inclined toward extra credit, though, are likely to know that the former Jeffrey “K.D.” Kagel, renamed Krishna Das after years of studying alongside his guru, Mahara ji, in India, is a one-time rock singer from Long Island, N.Y. All One, Krishna’s ninth CD, delivers inward-looking listeners that much closer to recognizing the chant master’s unlikely background on their own, though. Essentially an hour-long melodic recitation of the name Hare Krishna set to accompaniment that ranges from Indian to classical to rock in style, the disc makes use of several rock & roll heavy hitters. Co-produced with Walter Becker (Steely Dan), Jay Messina (Aerosmith), and David Nichtern (who wrote “Midnight at the Oasis”), All One finds Becker on bass, Nichtern on guitar, and Def Leppard’s Rick Allen on drums. Which accounts for why, even on more sedate tracks, a certain rock energy seeps through. That Krishna Das manages that influence without allowing the disc to become a mongrelized slab of meditation-lite — it’s quite listenable in a head-clearing sort of way — is a testament, maybe, to the concept that his burnished, entrancing voice comes from a place purer than most. ~ Tammy La Gorce, Rovi |

Ambition $11.99 Any style of music, no matter how resolutely unfashionable, has its practitioners and passionate fans. Still, it’s strange to think that ’80s style AOR/hard rock is, in 2006, the same kind of fringe genre as ’50s rockabilly or Appalachian dulcimer music, practiced by an ever-dwindling number of artists for a steadfast but shrinking audience. Bands that sound like former superstars like Night Ranger or Survivor are now recording exclusively for tiny foreign labels selling mostly over the internet and at club gigs, and new bands in the style are usually new combinations of members of old bands in the style. Which brings us to Ambition. Starring lead singers Thom Griffin (Trillion), Joe Vana (Mecca), and Jean-Michel Byron (singer in a post-stardom lineup of Toto) and shepherded by Italian label Frontiers Records (which has become the Norton Records of ’80s pop/rock), Ambition’s self-titled debut album feels like it was assembled by a computer programmed to distill the play list of the average FM radio station circa 1984 into one 50-minute album. The ultra-clean production showcases Tommy Denander’s tastefully chorused guitar parts under the anonymous trio of lead singers, with producer Fabrizio Grossi’s own synth lines adding an occasional hint of Signals-era Rush. Since the album is clearly aimed directly at the likes and dislikes of existing fans of the style, Ambition take care to color entirely within the lines. With nothing unexpected or unusual to mar the album’s smooth surfaces, Ambition sounds glossy but hollow; when the album’s best song is a cover of a minor single by Mr. Mister (“Waiting in My Dreams”), that’s all the proof necessary of the essential vapidity of the exercise. ~ Stewart Mason, Rovi |

Awakening $16.98 When jazz critic Peter Margasak interviewed Nicole Mitchell for the liner notes he wrote for Awakening, she explained: “I wanted to dig back into the old-school jazz a bit and yet still make room to branch out into never-never land.” And that is a perfect description of what the Chicago-based flutist/composer does on this 2011 date, which finds her leading a pianoless quartet that employs Jeff Parker on electric guitar, Harris Bankhead on upright bass and Avreeayl Ra on drums and percussion. Presumably, the “old-school jazz” that Mitchell is referring to is post-bop, while “the never-never land” is avant-garde jazz. Of course, avant-garde jazz comes in many different flavors. Avant-garde jazz can be totally outside (whether it is scorching, dense, brutally atonal free jazz or the spaciness of the AACM), or it can be avant-garde jazz with an inside/outside perspective–and Awakening, like previous Mitchell releases, has an inside/outside perspective. The material that Mitchell composed for Awakening is fairly melodic; “There,” “Momentum” and the bluesy “F.O.C.,” for example, offer appealing post-bop melodies. “Curly Top” even has a somewhat Horace Silver-ish funkiness. So no, this 64-minute CD is not an exercise in atonality; that isn’t the scenario at all. But at the same time, Mitchell and her colleagues don’t hesitate to venture into outside playing when they feel like it. They don’t venture far outside, but they do venture outside–and while Awakening is more inside than outside, the outside element is an attractive part of the equation. Mitchell, it should be noted, has favored different combinations of musicians on different albums; she is quite proficient when it comes to ensemble playing and arranging, but an intimate quartet format serves her equally well on Awakening. And once again, the Chicago resident excels as both a composer and a soloist. ~ Alex Henderson, Rovi |

Bach: Inventions & Partita $16.98 Listeners looking for an exercise in virtuosity may find Janine Jansen’s 2007 Bach recording a disappointment; the serious nature of the program precludes showboating. But listeners hoping that Jansen had more musical individuality to offer than was revealed in her early recordings of standard violin showpieces may find this recording a wonderful surprise. In the Inventions, Jansen is an equal partner with violist Maxim Rysanov and cellist Torleif Thed? en in performances of wit, feeling, and subtle grace. In the Partita and especially its excruciatingly ecstatic Chaconne, Jansen delivers consummate musicality and surpassing emotional honesty. Decca’s sound is close and evocative. ~ James Leonard, Rovi |

Back in the Circus $16.98 Jonatha Brooke’s perseverance has paid off. Like Aimee Mann, she’s maneuvered a broken staircase of fluctuating acceptance, band breakups, and record label shakeups with nimble feet and a consistent songwriting vision. Now, she’s arrived on the top floor landing with Back in the Circus, a typically audacious effort that showcases her singing and writing even as it flirts with new musical directions. Good timing — Circus is the third release for her Bad Dog imprint, but the first to benefit from Verve’s distribution, suggesting that its nods to accessibility will find plenty of willing ears. Another first — Brooke served as her own producer. Who better to know just when — or when not to — accentuate Back in the Circus’ expressive vocals, pointed lyrics, and intriguing story arc with subtle programming or bits of modernist instrumental sampling? Sure, Brooke and principal collaborators Eric Bazilian and Ryan Freeland get a bit carried away sometimes. “Less Than Love Is Nothing”’s push-button percussion stippling and synth washes sidle too closely to being simply satisfactory in the electronic-organic world of 21st century adult alternative music. Likewise, the breezy keys and treated, three-prong glitches of her run through “Fire and Rain” make it pleasant but tentative — too preoccupied with converting the casual fan searching for a gimmick. Covers of “God Only Knows” and Alan Parsons’ “Eye in the Sky” fare much better. The scratchy electronics and acoustic tatters of the former are a cool exercise in deconstruction, while the latter is remade as a classic Jonatha Brooke folk song, full of gorgeously wavering vocal phrasing and tasteful twinges of mandolin over its melancholy piano rhythms. Brooke’s originals overwhelmingly benefit from Circus’ digital organics. The title track is an unbalanced and dizzying cocktail, with accordion, keys, guitar, and laptops all joining in the fray. “Back in the circus/But at least I know the routine,” she sings. “… |
